Free Batteries at Staples

Who doesn't need batteries?! And with the holidays right around the corner, now is a great time to stock up. Right now at Staples, you can buy up to two packs of 20-pack Duracell AA or AAA batteries for $12.99 each and receive $12.99 each back on your Staples Rewards account. That means that you'll receive a check in a few weeks for the full amount of the batteries that you can spend at Staples. I love free!

To take advantage of this deal you need to have a Staples Rewards account, however, so before you buy the batteries, sign up for one.

Want $10 to spend on toys or other gifts this holiday season? Keebler is offering $10 in toy cash (a.k.a. a check) when you buy five specially-marked packages of their cookies and/or crackers. There is an order form to request your check inside the boxes, along with a special Toy Cash Token you need to cut out and send with the order form.

There are also Keebler pamphlets with coupons good toward many of the cookies and crackers participating in the promotion, so pick up some of them at the grocery store before you check out. I bought Town House crackers, butFlipSides, Club, Toasteds, and Cheez-it Party Mix are all eligible as long as you buy a box with the special Toy Cash announcement on it.

Baby Einstein DVD Refund Now Available

If you are one of the thousands, if not millions, of parents who purchased a Baby Einstein DVD between June 5, 2004 and September 4, 2009 in the name of education, you can now get a full refund for your purchase. Apparently those claims that watching Baby Einstein DVDs can be beneficial for young children was never substantiated, says the FTC, so Disney is offering a full refund or exchange. Learn more and print out the refund request here: http://www.babyeinstein.com/(S(3qnoffi1whnnnt55h2ljk355))/parentsguide/satisfaction/upgrade_us.html

Bargain Kid Stuff in Rochester

If you live in Western New York and have children or grandchildren, I highly recommend shopping at the Weepeats sale this weekend at the former Dome Arena in Henrietta.

I helped set up this morning and the racks are stuffed full of adorable clothes, costumes, books, toys, baby gear and more. It's a consignment sale of baby, youth and teen clothing, primarily, but you'll also find shoes, sports equipment, bedding, cribs, strollers - you name it.

You don't need a coupon, but get there early for the best selection.

$25 Gift Certificates for $2 at Restaurant.com

Now is one of those special times of year when Restaurant. com reduces the price of its $10 and $25 gift certificates by 80%. So instead of paying $10 for a $25 gift certificate to your favorite local restaurant, you can pay only $2. And those $10 gift certificates which usually cost $4 are only $.80. Such a deal!

Skim the list of participating restaurants in your area at the website, www.restaurant.com, and when you find one you like or have been meaning to try out, order a downloadable gift certificate and use the promotional code TASTE at checkout to reduce your total cost.

Read the fine print about limits on certificates from each restaurant - I think it's two per month, but check for yourself - and the minimum purchase required. In many cases, you need to spend $20 to use a $10 certificate and $35 or $50 to use a $25 certificate. So for $12 or so, you can enjoy a delicious $35 meal at a great local eatery. Enjoy!

Great Deals at CVS

If you can make it to a CVS today, you'll be entitled to some freebies that are only available today (and yesterday). They include a free CVS transparent or invisible tape dispenser and a CVS pencil sharpener or pack of #2 pencils - free after Extra Care Bucks, that is.

But even if you can't make it in today, you can still take advantage of the following deals through next Saturday:

Cheez-it crackers are 2/$4 and there is a Coors rebate flyer at most places that sell beer offering a $2 rebate when you buy two boxes. With that, you can get 2 boxes of Cheez-its for $2.

Popwerades are 5 bottles/$5, which is a good deal.

Dawn dish liquid is 2/$2, but you'll receive $1 in ECBs when you buy 2, bringing the total to 2/$1. And there are $.20 Dawn coupons around, so if you use 2 of them, you'll be able to buy 2 bottles for $.60. That's a great deal.

Colgate Total toothpaste is $1.49 after a $2 ECB and there are $1.50 coupons circulating from a few weeks ago that could bring your total down to free. I think the limit is 1 purchase, however.

Another good deal is on the Tampax Pearl tampons bonus size box. They are 2/$14 this week, minus $4 in ECBS, bringing the cost down to 2/$10. However, if you have any of the $1 coupons, you can get the cost down to 2/$8.

And finally, if you need some batteries, just buy $25 worth of the following P&G products at CVS and receive a 4-pack of Duracell AAA or AA batteries for free: Pringles, Charmin, Basic paper towels, Pantene Pro-V shampoo or conditioner, Tide, Downy, Bounce, Crest, Oral-B, Pampers, Always, Clairol hair color, Clinical Strength, Secret, Old Spice, or Gillette deodorant.

Don't Miss these Walgreens Deals this Week

Although Walgreens has discontinued its EasySaver rebate program, there are still opportunities to get products for free. Essentially, you buy the product, pay for it, and out prints a coupon at the register - called a Register Reward - to be used on your next purchase. In many cases, that coupon is equal to what you just paid.

This week, if you buy Roots of Nature Hair Care for $6, you'll immediately receive a $6 register reward. Also, if you buy a 120 count bottle of Iceland Health Omega-3 fish oil tablets for $8, you'll receive an $8 register reward. Final cost? Nada.

Another promotion to be aware of: If you buy 3 Axe products, you'll get one free movie ticket, and if you buy 5 Axe products, you'll receive 2 movie tickets. Plus, Axe body and hair products are 25% off this week, for an added incentive.

Colgate MaxFresh or MaxWhite toothpaste is $2.99 this week, but you'll receive a $2 register reward, so your final cost is $.99. And if you use one of the many $1 or $1.50 coupons floating around, you'll get it for free.

There are many other products on sale, but those are the ones that are free or nearly so that you'll want to try and pick up asap, before they run out.

This week at Tops, Nestle semi-sweet morsels are $1.99 and if you use the $.75 Nestle coupon in yesterday's insert, you can buy chips for $.49. Stock up if you can!

Make Cash by Selling Books

I love saving money as much as anyone, but I also love making it by selling off stuff around my house. I just heard about Cash4Books this morning, went online and entered the ISBNs of a few books I've been meaning to get rid of. Ca-ching, I earned $9.80 in just a few minutes.

Now all I do is box up the books and apply the pre-paid shipping label - they pay shipping - I printed off at the site, and I receive a PayPal payment within three days of the box's arrival.

So in addition to keeping more money in your wallet with coupons, consider selling some of your used books to get some money to put into that wallet. Here's the site: http://cash4books.net/index.php?ref=106794

Happy selling!

Watch for in-store Eggo flyer

While picking up some waffles at Tops this past weekend, I spotted some Eggo flyers that look like this on a nearby display and grabbed a few.

On the back page are five coupons, each for $1.00 off 1 Eggo frozen product. They're good until September 1, 2009 and between now and then, I suspect we'll see Eggo waffles go on sale for close to $1.00. So grab some of these in-store flyers if you see them!

Turn in those empty ink cartridges

I've been going through a lot of printer ink recently (working on my next book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Vision Boards) and noticed I had a few empty cartridges lying around, taking up space. Maybe you do, too. Well, don't let them clutter up your home - turn them into store credit.

I brought mine into Staples and received a credit of $3 each that will arrive as part of my next quarterly check for being a Staples Dividends rewards member. I'm certain that OfficeMax and Office Depot have similar programs for recycling ink cartridges, but I like being able to "bank" my savings until my next check. That means I'll be receiving at least $15 to spend - probably on more ink.

Monday, February 16, 2009

Another Free Monday Movie

Yes, it's Monday again so head on over to your closest Redbox to score a free movie rental. Use Promo code M7DM23 today through midnight and enjoy that movie you've been wanting to see. Maybe "The Secret Life of Bees?"

You can even reserve it online to be sure it's there waiting for you. Go to www.redbox.com to check out this new feature.

Free body lotion with purchase at Bath & Body Works

Through Wednesday of this week (February 11), you will receive a free Bath & Body Works Signature body lotion (retail value of $10.50) with any Eau de Toilette purchase. Their Warm Vanilla Sugar Eau de Toilette is my favorite. Love the smell of vanilla!

So if you're considering a perfume purchase for Valentine's Day, or want to help your mate with a suggestion, do it before Wednesday and score some free body lotion, too.

Excellent Deal on Flip Camera at Amazon

I realize that not everyone is in the market for an easy-to-use videocamera, but since I've been studying these for a few weeks, I know that Amazon's Deal of the Day is a good one. Today only, you can buy a Flip Ultra Camera with 30 minutes of video, in white, for just $59.99. This camera is normally $149.99, which is why today's price caught my eye. Here's the link, in case you want to check it out: http://www.amazon.com/Flip-Video-Ultra-Camcorder-30-Minutes/dp/B000V1PXL4/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1234204090&sr=8-1

I've been looking into this kind of videocamera because I plan to start doing some short videos on this site, to help people find the good coupon deals. But it would also be great for use at home or at sporting events because the steps involved in uploading the video you take are so minimal. YouTube here I come!

Monday Free Movie

There are some great deals at Rite Aid this week, which I'll tell you about in a separate post, but here is the code for today's free movie at all Redbox kiosks. It's good through midnight tonight: 25CH63.

Money-Back Guarantee on Clorox 2

If you're like me, you go through a lot of stain removal products when you do your laundry. My children like to test my ability to get things like grass, chocolate, and oil - which have all managed to find their way to knees and ends of long-sleeved shirts - out of their clothing. Fortunately, there's a new money-back guarantee that I'm going to test. There is no risk in buying Clorox 2 Stain Fighter and Color Booster right now due to a money-back guarantee in effect through June 30, 2009.

Simply click here to access the form, print it out, and follow the instructions to get up to $7.00 back if you buy and then don't like this particular variation of Clorox 2.

Most Costco Shoppers Don't Save

Many of us believe that by shopping at warehouse stores like Sam's Club, BJ's, and Costco we save money. We pay a membership fee in order to be able to shop there and then purchase in large quantities to yield a lower per-unit cost. Well, the per-unit cost may be lower, but our savings? Not so big.

A Harvard Business School study done about a year ago indicates that warehouse clubs may cost us more than they save us. It was an interesting study that I encourage you to skim before you head out to stock up on 50 rolls of paper towels or a 10-pack of cereal.

Free Starbucks cup of Coffee

Starting today, January 21st, through Sunday, January 25th, if you go to the Starbucks website and commit to volunteering five hours in your community, you'll get a coupon for a free tall cup of coffee.

Aunt Jemima Taste Guarantee

I've been seeing more companies offering taste or satisfaction guarantees on their product as an enticement to try it out, rather than a coupon. Works for me! I'm much more apt to buy a different brand if I know I'll get my money back if no one in my household likes it much.

Right now there is just such a taste guarantee on Aunt Jemima pancakes through March 31st. If you buy Aunt Jemima brand pancakes and don't love them, go online here and fill in the information from your box - so don't throw away the box just yet! You should then receive a check to cover the cost of the pancakes you bought within a few weeks.

Circuit City Savings Questionable

You've probably heard by now that electronics retailer Circuit City is closing its doors and has started to sell off its inventory, as of last Saturday. Our local Circuit City was certainly mobbed yesterday as my family and I headed out in search of a bargain. Unfortunately, there were few. Oh, there was merchandise, but almost everything was only 10% off, with CDs and DVDs 20% off, and accessories 30%.

However, if you check the sticker prices, you'll see that much of the items are overpriced by comparison to other stores.

We were looking at a 52" Sony LCD TV. I know, a bit extravagant, but our nearly 10-year-old TV's speakers are shot and we need to get something to replace it. Anyway, Circuit City has it for $2,499, minus 10%. However, a quick search online back at home revealed that you can get it for as little as $1,700 from other stores. We're not ready to plunk down that much cash, but now we know what the threshold is that Circuit City has to cross before we'd buy from them.

I hope you have better luck finding bargains at your local store!

Burger King Whopper Deal Rescinded

If you heard about Burger King's offer to give you a free Whopper sandwich if you deleted 10 friends on Facebook, you can forget about it now. Facebook disabled the application. The former website was www.whoppersacrifice.com.

Article about the Problem with Retailer Discounts

Although the point of this Associated Press article is to discuss how retailers are going to break the cycle of ever-increasing discounts and bargains, I'm quoted as one of the shoppers who has grown accustomed to 80% - and is liking it!

Lots of Sunday coupons

Happy New Year!

What a great way to start off the new year - with a ton of coupon inserts on Sunday, January 4th. Rumor has it that there will be five inserts.

You may want to scan which coupons are being distributed before running out to buy more papers at The Dollar Tree (where they're $1 here in Rochester), but with such volume, odds are good there will be some you can use.
